Welcome...

Introduction

The PIGS is a winter Golf Society based around the Veteran Members of Lindfield Golf Club (formerly Paxhill Park Golf Club). Seven meetings are scheduled to be held during the PIGS Season, from October to April, generally on the first Monday of each month. The first six are on "away" courses, the seventh and final meeting is at Lindfield. Members' guests are very welcome.

The format is a Stableford Competition, off full Society handicaps. A small prize is given to the winning member of each individual venue, ( presented after the final meeting). There is also a "Pig Nearest the Pin" prize for the player (member or guest) nearest the pin at a carefully selected hole at each venue.

The Stableford points are aggregated over the number of Meetings played by each Pig, and the person with the highest aggregate score is named "PIG of the Year", and is presented with the PIG of the Year Shield after the final meeting.

Drinks and a meal follow the golf , and PIG ties must be worn by members at the meal!! (PIG ties from Bangkok, showing PIGS in various unusual and interesting positions- rather Like Freddie Harrison's swing- are not allowed!...although we usually make an exception for an old swinger like Freddie ).

A Little History

The PIGS were founded at Paxhill Park Golf Club (since June 2007 the Lindfield Golf Club and Golf College), by Gordon Brown (before he was famous), in 1994. Rumour has it (from those old pigs Ron. and Dennis after a couple of drinks) that the first ever Pigs meeting was held at Seaford Golf Club and was won by a certain Mike Bruhl.

The "I" Word !

The acronym PIGS could be variously said to stand for Paxhill Inspired Golfers Society or the Paxhill Intelligent Golfers Society....but history has proven that it is undoubtedly much more likely to be the Paxhill Incompetent Golfers Society, or the Paxhill Inept Golfers Society...or, even more appropriately , the Paxhill Incontinent Golfers Society. (Thanks to Duncan Hamilton for the last one..and he should know!)

After careful consideration over many months by the combined intellect of the PIGs members (most have individual IQ's of well over 5), we have decided to retain the PIGS acronym in our title for two main extremely sound and rigorous reasons ..firstly, no one could pronounce LIGS , and secondly no one could remember what PIGS stood for anyway.

A Little More History

Gordon ran the PIGS for its first year, and subsequently Ron Lower and Dennis Partridge carried it on for the next two, Ron introducing the present format and arrangements, which have proved to be very successful.

Further organisers have been John Goodrich and Gordon Jackson , Bill Denyer and Arthur Kidman, Freddie Harrison and Tony Armistead,-all for 2 years ,Duncan Hamilton and David Brann -for 4 years, and Ivan Grundon and Nick Flindall for the seasons 2007/2008 and 2008/2009, and Colin Priestland and Mike Bruhl for 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 and Jim Beecham and Chris Burton for 2011/2012.

Steve Bish was the organiser for 2012/13 through to 2015/16. Peter Baldwin was the main organiser for 2016/17 and 2017/18 (with individual events being organised by Brian Bunt, Alan Fuller,Rick Evans, John Gregory and David Watson). Freddie Harrison was the organiser for 2018/19 and Steve Bish currently.

The objectives

Everyone has their own, but ours are as follows:-

Simple.....enjoyment, camaraderie, friendly competition, and to play a variety of different courses .
